Knowing Adventure, Love and Purpose by Carol Holmes Shattuck

Their story

Carol Holmes Shattuck came to My Stories Matter with a life story already written.

Her memoir, Knowing Adventure, Love and Purpose, was filled with family history, travel, love, loss, meaningful work, personal reflections and memories she wanted to preserve for future generations.

But Carol didn’t simply want her manuscript printed.

She wanted a beautifully designed book that felt worthy of the life it represented — something her children, grandchildren and extended family could read, enjoy and keep for years to come.

Her project became a true collaboration. Carol brought the stories, photographs, letters and family details. Our team helped shape, organise, design, refine and prepare everything for print.

The result was more than a finished memoir. It became a family heirloom.

“I am VERY HAPPY with everything about this effort. Arnie, the enhanced photos are terrific.”

Copies ordered

In 2025, Carol worked with My Stories Matter to create 20 copies of her book for family and friends. Later in 2026, we created an improved second edition with updated photos and a new spine design, when she ordered 5 more copies.

The challengeThe story was written. The book still needed shaping.

Carol had already done something many people find difficult: she had written her memoir.

But turning a large manuscript into a finished book is a different kind of challenge.

There were chapters to arrange, photographs to place, captions to refine, quotes and letters to format, cover colours to consider, and family details to get right.

Carol also had a meaningful deadline. She wanted finished copies in time for a special family occasion, which meant the book needed to be carefully created without losing momentum.

This was not a simple print job.

It was a personal memoir filled with family history, old photographs, important dates, travel memories, letters and stories that mattered. Every detail needed to feel considered.

Why she chose My Stories MatterShe wanted a book created with care, not just printed.

Carol was closely involved throughout the process. She cared about the order of the chapters, the placement of photographs, the look of the cover, the formatting of letters and quotes, and the way her family history would be experienced by future readers.

But she didn’t want to figure everything out alone.

She wanted professional guidance from people who could explain what would work best on the page and in print.

That collaborative approach became one of the most important parts of the project.

Carol could ask questions. Kelly could offer design recommendations. Arnie could help enhance photos and advise on production details. Ideas moved back and forth until the book became exactly what Carol wanted it to be.

“Thanks so much, VERY exciting to see the manuscript in this format. I took a quick look and I love the way you have laid it out.”
More than a manuscriptThe process helped bring more memories forward.

As the book developed, Carol continued uncovering meaningful pieces of her story.

She found additional photographs. She added family details. She discovered letters written by her brother during her family’s travels in the 1950s. She added an excerpt about a typhoon experience. She found a newborn photo of her daughter, Megan. She refined dates, captions and chapter titles as the book came together.

This is one of the things that can happen when a memoir becomes visual.

Seeing the story laid out as a real book can help people remember what else belongs there.

The design process gave Carol space to keep improving the memoir while our team helped manage the structure, formatting and print timeline.

What we helped with
Creating a clear structure

Carol wanted the memoir to follow a meaningful order, but not every memory had a simple date attached to it.

Our team helped organise the chapters, update the table of contents, place opening pages, refine the title page and create a natural flow from the first page to the final chapter.

This included thoughtful details such as a half-title page, a cover information page, a dedication layout and consistent formatting for letters and quotes.

Designing a book that felt personal

Carol had a clear sense of what she wanted, but she was also open to professional suggestions.

Together, we explored cover colours, image placement, back cover text, caption formatting and interior layouts. Small choices made a big difference: whether a photo should sit above or below a dedication, whether quotes should be italicised and indented, how to group travel photos, and how to make each page feel inviting.

The goal was always the same: to create a memoir that felt elegant, readable and true to Carol’s story.

“Love it!”
Bringing photos back to life

Photographs were central to Carol’s memoir.

Many of them carried decades of family history, travel memories and personal meaning. Our team enhanced selected images for print, adjusted tones, removed distractions, improved clarity and helped make the visual story feel more consistent throughout the book.

Some changes were small, but important. A cover photo was improved for large-format printing. Black-and-white images were standardised. Travel photos were adjusted and arranged so the pages felt balanced and easy to enjoy.

“Please use the enhanced versions of the photos. Big improvements.”

Supporting every revision

Carol was deeply involved in reviewing the book. She left comments, refined captions, adjusted chapter titles, added photos, requested small changes and asked thoughtful questions about design and formatting.

Our team worked through those revisions with her carefully, making sure each update was understood and applied.

The process was detailed, but it never became impersonal. Carol had real people guiding her through each stage until she felt ready to approve the book for print.

During revisions, Carol asked for a special trip to be highlighted

The resultA memoir she couldn’t wait to gift

By the final review, Carol had a book that reflected her life, her family and the memories she wanted to preserve.

She approved the memoir for print and ordered 20 copies, sending them to two locations so they could be shared with family.

The outcome:

  • A polished hardcover memoir created from Carol’s manuscript
  • A carefully designed book with restored and enhanced photographs
  • A clear structure for decades of family history and memories
  • Letters, quotes and captions formatted consistently
  • Twenty copies ordered as meaningful family gifts
  • A memoir Carol was proud to share
“I am delighted to say ‘let’s print’ my Memoir. I can’t wait to have it in my hands and to gift it to my family.”

Carol’s final message captured what mattered most about the project: not just the finished book, but the care behind it.

“I love working with you both and will happily spread the word about your great company and your amazing support.”

Why this matters

Many people come to My Stories Matter with more than a blank page. But having the material is only the beginning.

Carol’s story shows what can happen when a memoir is created with real collaboration: the structure becomes clearer, the photos become stronger, the design becomes more personal and the finished book becomes something a family can truly treasure.

She arrived with a manuscript. Together, we helped turn it into a family heirloom.
